What BinMinder is
Bin day is a small problem with a fixed price: miss it and the bin stays full for another week or fortnight. The information is public — every council publishes a collection calendar — but it sits on a different website, in a different format, in every area. BinMinder does the looking-up once and then remembers on your behalf.
Give us an address and we match it to whichever source publishes that area's calendar: 342 councils in the United Kingdom and 595 across the other 14 countries — counting only the ones where a source has been checked and works. Kerbside collection is organised locally almost everywhere, so coverage is uneven: some markets run on one national system, most on individual council or municipal ones, and a few on a single city at a time. The country pages list all 985 places we hold data for and mark which of them we can serve today, rather than claiming a whole map.
There is no app and no account. Outside the UK we need an address and an email address, and nothing else. On binminder.co.uk you can take the reminder as a browser push notification instead, or as an SMS or a WhatsApp message. Email and browser push are free forever; SMS and WhatsApp are the paid tier, because each of those messages costs us real money to send.
How the reminders work
Four things happen between typing an address and getting a message the night before.

Your address is matched to a source
The lookup runs on the address you type, not on a postcode district: half the source formats we support will not answer without a house number and a street name. What comes back is the set of collection dates that source holds for your address.

We re-read the calendar every night
At 02:00 a job re-fetches the schedule behind every active subscription. Collection dates move — public holidays above all — and a reminder built from a calendar we read weeks ago is worse than no reminder at all.

The message arrives the evening before
The sender runs every hour on the hour and picks up everyone whose reminder time falls in that hour and who has a collection tomorrow. Six in the evening is the default; the time is yours to change, and it is read in your own timezone rather than ours.

It says which bins, in your language
The message names the streams due — general waste, recycling, garden, food, glass — in the words your country uses: Restmüll in Germany, matavfall in Sweden, ordures ménagères in France. Reminders go out in 9 languages, and every one carries a link to change your times or stop altogether.
In the United Kingdom there is one extra step: we read the gov.uk bank-holiday calendar, warn you when a holiday looks likely to move your collection, and confirm the new date once the council publishes it.

15 countries are live. The United Kingdom has its own domain; the other 14 live here on binminder.co. Every country page has its own address checker and names each council behind it. Where a card shows two numbers, the first is how many councils have a checked, working source and the second is how many that country's page lists in total.

Sorting rules are national, not universal. What belongs in the Gelber Sack in Germany is not what belongs in the yellow-lidded bin in Australia, and the words for it differ too — so these are written per country, in that country's own language. 40 of them so far.

When a council website breaks
Council websites change without warning, and a bin reminder that quietly stops is worse than one that never started. So every source behind the international markets is re-probed on a rotating hourly sweep, 25 sources a run, which walks the whole set in about a day.
Three consecutive failures take a source out of the coverage this site advertises, so we stop sending people at something broken; three consecutive successes put it back, with no code change in between. One flaky fetch never counts — a blocked request or a passing 5xx is usually the network, not the council.

Ireland, Belgium and Spain are next in line: we have their council lists, but not one verified data source between them yet, so they stay off the live list until they earn a place on it. The last card is for anywhere we have not named — tell us where you live and it counts as a vote.
