Waste collection in your municipality – when does the collection vehicle come?

In Sweden, waste is collected by the municipality's cleansing service or a municipal waste company, such as Stockholm Vatten och Avfall, Renova in Gothenburg or Sysav in Skåne. Your municipality's collection plan determines how often your bins are emptied. Residual waste is often collected every two or four weeks, while many municipalities collect food waste more frequently. Your exact collection day depends on your property and appears in the municipality's collection schedule.

Household sorting usually separates food waste from residual waste. Food waste is collected in brown paper bags or a separate, often brown, bin and turned into biogas and biofertiliser. Residual waste, which remains after all recyclable material has been removed, goes in a separate bin, often black, grey or green depending on the municipality, and is used to recover energy. Packaging made of paper, plastic, metal and glass should not normally go in either bin and must be sorted separately.

Many municipalities provide collection from the property, using multi-compartment or separate bins for packaging and newspapers. In other areas, take packaging to the nearest återvinningsstation neighbourhood recycling point. Always take bulky and hazardous waste, such as leftover paint, batteries and chemicals, to an återvinningscentral recycling centre. The easiest way to return deposit-bearing PET bottles and cans is through a machine at a grocery shop, where you receive the deposit straight away.

• Keep food waste in a paper bag with the top folded over. It stays dry and smells less than a plastic bag.
• Collection plans often change around public holidays such as Christmas and Midsummer, so double-check the municipality's schedule before a holiday.
• If your municipality permits it, put the bin out on the evening before collection, as collections may begin early in the morning.
• Return bottles and cans through a deposit machine before sorting the remaining packaging. The deposit is SEK 1–2 per can.
