Which Bin Goes Out Today? A Guide to New Zealand Kerbside Collections

Enter your address to see whether BinMinder can find your council collection dates for rubbish, recycling or food scraps.

Kerbside services are organised locally by city and district councils and are often delivered by contractors. Auckland Council, Wellington City Council and Christchurch City Council each publish their own service details, while some communities and properties use private collections. Your address determines whether a service is available, which containers it uses and when it runs.

Bin colours and collection patterns are not identical across New Zealand. Red-lid bins or official bags can be used for rubbish, yellow-lid bins for mixed recycling, and green-lid bins for food scraps or garden waste depending on the local service. Some councils collect glass separately in a crate or bin. Check the address-specific result and your council's instructions rather than relying on colour alone.

Public-holiday arrangements can change collection days. Some councils also offer separate booked services for bulky items. Auckland's annual inorganic collection is one example: eligible properties book a collection, then keep accepted items inside the property boundary for pickup. If a collection is missed or a bin is damaged, use the reporting route published by the council or provider.

Rubbish (general waste)

Red-lid wheelie bin (or official prepaid council rubbish bags in some districts)

Anything that can't be recycled or composted — such as soft plastics, polystyrene and nappies. Container rules and collection frequency depend on the local service.

Mixed recycling

Yellow-lid wheelie bin

Council-managed kerbside recycling follows national material standards, including clean paper, cardboard, tins, cans, glass bottles and jars, and accepted plastic containers numbered 1, 2 and 5. Follow local instructions for lids, presentation and frequency.

Food scraps

Green-lid wheelie bin (Auckland and a growing number of councils)

Auckland's food-scraps service accepts food including meat, small bones, dairy and coffee grounds and runs weekly. Other council services and eligibility differ.

Garden waste

Green-lid bin (regions without food scraps) or an opt-in green waste bin

Grass clippings, prunings, leaves and weeds where the council or a private provider offers the service. Charges, containers and collection patterns vary.

Glass recycling

Blue crate or separate glass bin (varies by council)

Glass bottles and jars where glass is collected separately; window glass, Pyrex and ceramics do not belong in household glass recycling. Check the local container and schedule.

Inorganic collection

No bin — a booked, on-property Auckland collection

Eligible Auckland properties can book one annual collection for accepted bulky household items. Put the items in a tidy, accessible place inside your property boundary, never on the berm, kerb, footpath or roadside.

  • Follow the set-out instructions in your council's address-specific calendar; collection times and placement rules vary.
  • Public-holiday arrangements vary, so check your council's holiday calendar rather than assuming your usual day.
  • National standards define materials for council-managed kerbside recycling, while local containers and service arrangements still vary. Check your council's current instructions before putting items out.
  • For Auckland's booked inorganic service, keep accepted items inside your property boundary. Leaving them on the berm, kerb, footpath or roadside is treated as illegal dumping.
Who actually collects my bins in New Zealand?

Your city or district council publishes the arrangements for council-managed collections, which may be delivered by a contractor. Some communities or properties use private services instead, so check what is available for your exact address.

What do the different wheelie bin lid colours mean?

Red commonly marks rubbish and yellow mixed recycling. Green can mean food scraps or garden waste depending on the service, and some councils use bags or crates instead of wheelie bins. Check the label and your address-specific council instructions.

My council still uses rubbish bags — how does that work?

Some districts haven't moved to wheelie bins for rubbish. You buy official prepaid council bags from supermarkets or dairies, and only those bags are collected from the kerb. Recycling may still come in a wheelie bin or crate alongside them.

What is the inorganic collection?

Auckland Council offers eligible properties one booked inorganic collection each year for accepted bulky household items. Keep the items inside your property boundary, near the driveway or entrance where collectors can reach them. Do not put them on the berm, kerb, footpath or roadside.
