In Switzerland, waste disposal is a municipal responsibility. Each municipality sets its own collection dates, recycling points and charges. Put a Züri-Sack out on the wrong day and you will have to bring it back in; miss the cardboard collection and the next one may be two weeks away. BinMinder follows these local calendars and reminds you on the evening before the correct collection.
The Swiss system consistently follows the polluter-pays principle. Household refuse is collected only in official, prepaid chargeable sacks, such as the Züri-Sack in Zurich or the corresponding municipal sack elsewhere, or in a sack bearing a paid waste sticker. Every full sack costs money, so careful sorting pays twice over: green waste, paper and cardboard are usually cheaper or free to dispose of and substantially reduce the amount of costly residual waste.
Traditional household wheelie bins are less common in many cities; larger containers are mainly used for places such as retirement homes and housing developments. You take glass, scrap metal, PET and aluminium to municipal collection points or recycling centres yourself, often beside the village shop or railway station. Return PET bottles to a retailer and take aluminium and scrap metal to a collection point. All are free of charge.
Collectors take only official prepaid chargeable sacks or sacks bearing a valid waste sticker. Other sacks are left behind, and many municipalities may also fine you for unlawful disposal.
