In Australia, kerbside waste collection is run locally. Councils set their own schedules, contractors and accepted materials, so there is no single national bin calendar and your address matters.
Bin colours and collection frequency depend on the council and service. Some councils use a weekly general-waste round and an alternating recycling or organics round; others use a different pattern. Green-lid services may take garden organics only or FOGO โ food organics and garden organics โ so check the accepted-items list and address-specific calendar before setting a routine.
Councils may offer hard waste, bulky verge collections or booked clean-ups with their own limits and booking windows; Perth and WA verge services and Sydney council clean-ups are examples of local schemes. Drink bottles and cans can also earn 10 cents back through container deposit schemes like Return and Earn in NSW and Containers for Change in Queensland and WA โ check the scheme's eligibility and return locations.
Red lid
Non-recyclable household rubbish. Check your council's accepted-items list, collection cadence and any lid or weight limits.
Yellow lid
Paper, cardboard, hard plastics, glass, steel and aluminium cans โ loose, never bagged where the local program requires it. Follow your council's accepted-items list and calendar.
Green lid
Garden organics where the council provides this service; some programs also take food scraps (FOGO) with a kitchen caddy and approved liners. Check the local accepted-items list and calendar.
Verge pile (no bin)
Furniture, mattresses and whitegoods handled through a scheduled or booked verge service where offered. Volume, accepted items and set-out timing are council-specific.
Booked kerbside pile
Some councils offer booked collections for bulky household items. Book ahead where required and follow the council's placement and set-out instructions.
Return point, not a bin
Eligible drink bottles and cans earn 10c each at Return and Earn (NSW) or Containers for Change (QLD/WA) depots and reverse vending machines.
Check the set-out time in your council's address-specific calendar. Collection times and placement rules vary between councils and services.
It depends on your council. FOGO councils accept food scraps plus garden waste, often with a supplied kitchen caddy; others take garden organics only. Check your council website before adding food waste.
It depends on the council and holiday. Check the address-specific council calendar rather than assuming the date changes.
Yes โ most states run a 10-cent container deposit scheme, such as Return and Earn in NSW and Containers for Change in QLD and WA. Return eligible containers at a depot or reverse vending machine instead of binning them.
